Dr. Benjamin

Audio / Produced by The High Calling

Transcript

When Regina Benjamin graduated from med school, and hung her shingle in a poor fishing village, her friends thought she was nuts!

But Regina wanted “to make a difference.” She used her savings to buy equipment and to rent an old pharmacy. And the patients came. They paid Regina with pecans, oysters, and shrimp, or by walking in their monthly payments.

When a hurricane smashed Benjamin’s clinic, she made house calls from her pickup. She also took part-time jobs to help support her work.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. At age 45, Regina Benjamin became the first woman president of the Alabama State Medical Association. But her passion is still her patients. As she makes her living, she models her life on the high calling of our daily work.

"Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."

(John 6:27)
