Michael J. Fox

Audio / Produced by The High Calling

Transcript

In his book, Lucky Man, actor Michael J. Fox tells the story of his battle with Parkinson's disease. Just after surgery to still the tremors in his left hand, he noticed new tremors, ever so slight, in his other hand.

"What am I going to do now? After all I'd been through . . . I was going to do what I've been doing every day for the last few years: Just show up and do the best that I could with whatever lay in front of me."

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. In response to his disorder, Fox chose courage—but one choice wasn't enough. One big choice is the beginning of a thousand small ones. Just as Fox must repeatedly choose to reject bitterness and self-pity, we all must reaffirm every day, in a thousand small ways, the high calling of our daily work.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

(Rom. 12:2)
