A Real Pro

Can you imagine a pro athlete who would knowingly disqualify himself from a full year of competition? I'm thinking of a pro golfer who did just that: J. P. Hayes.

The Q-School is where golfers qualify to play on the PGA tour. In a qualifying round—on only one hole—J. P. unknowingly played a nonapproved ball. A day later, he realized the error. He called an official and turned himself in. That admission disqualified him from a year's PGA earnings.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. J. P. Hayes could have hidden his mistake . . . or blamed the caddy. Instead, though it cost him, he did the right thing. That kind of hard decision, well made, is the high calling of our daily work.

A good name is more desirable than great riches;
to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
