Years ago, a taxi driver in Washington D.C. told me this story about his son.
Three years before, dissatisfied with public school, his son asked his father if he could go to a prep school in New York. To humor the eager boy, his dad agreed to finance an entrance examination—sure his son would fail. But he passed! So his father kept a regular day job and drove a taxi at night.
The proud father said, “It’s a matter of values. I only got to seventh grade myself. I can’t change the world, but I can change the part of the world I’m responsible for.”
This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. One man, committed to his family, has changed his son’s life and the world around him. He inspires me. His spirit exemplifies the high calling of our daily work.
"Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
