Workaholic

Transcript

My friend Wayne Oates was professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Back in the '70s, he wrote a book called Confessions of a Workaholic: The Facts about Work Addiction. With that book title, he coined the term "workaholic."

Wayne's concept was that work can become an addiction not unlike alcoholism. The work addict, he said, ''drops out of the human community'' in a drive for perfection.

As a society, we Americans tend to praise workaholism. We fail to acknowledge its damage, especially in relationships.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Work is good—in fact, work is a gift—but compulsive work is no good at all. Guard your work/life balance in the high calling of our daily work.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven. Eccl. 3:1
