Dave Brubeck: Doctor of Theology
Jazz lovers know about Dave Brubeck; his album Time Out is one of jazz history’s all-time best-sellers.
But do they know that his music also earned him an honorary doctorate of sacred theology?
Brubeck wrote his first oratorio based on his WWII experiences in Europe … and called it A Light in the Wilderness. He blended instruments and voice to narrate Christ’s words about loving our enemies. The academics awarding the degree said his musical talent helps people discover love for God and their enemies.
This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Dave Brubeck followed his talent into uncharted fields of imagination. That unknown path can lead us to our best selves … in the high calling of our daily work.
Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
