Lead With Your Own Gifts

Remember David and Goliath? Before David faced the giant, he talked with King Saul. The king was worried. "You're just a boy," he said.

Finally, Saul was convinced. He gave David his own bronze armor, a bronze sword, and a heavy bronze helmet. The entire suit must have weighed as much as 45 pounds!

But David was a shepherd, not a soldier. He took off Saul's armor. He picked up his sling. From a stream, he chose five smooth stones.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. It only took one stone to bring down that giant. David understood gifts and talents. We cannot wear other people's armor. We face our own giants with our own gifts . . . in the high calling of our daily work.

"All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give all of you into our hands." (1 Sam. 17:47)
