Forgiving

Author Philip Yancey tells of two peacemakers approaching a group of Polish Christians 10 years after World War II. They asked the Poles to meet with other Christians from West Germany. The German group wanted forgiveness for its nation’s deeds in the war.
The Poles hesitated and said, “No. We cannot forgive.”
Before they parted, they all recited the Lord’s Prayer. When they reached the words “forgive us our sins … as we forgive … ” everyone stopped.
This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. A year later, the Poles and Germans met in Vienna. Friendships from that meeting continue to this day. Humanly, the Poles could not bury their anger. Only through faith could they move forward, a lesson for us all—in the high calling of our daily work.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.”
