Grounds for Learning

A little over a century ago, a California couple named Leland and Jane took their teenage boy on a trip to Italy. While there, the young man grew sick and died.

In their grief, the couple took some land they'd acquired and set it aside for education. They said, "The children of California will be our children." And that donated land? Today, it is the home of Stanford University—named for Leland and Jane Stanford.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. The Psalms tell us that "weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning." If you are weeping now, your Heavenly Father knows it. Trust him. Your weeping can turn to joy—for you and for others—in the high calling of our daily work.

Sing to the LORD, you saints of his;
praise his holy name.
For his anger lasts only a moment,
but his favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may remain for a night,
but rejoicing comes in the morning.
