That Gut Feeling

Audio / Produced by The High Calling

Transcript

Jim pulled out of the company parking lot and headed home. The big meeting was tomorrow, and everything was ready. Or was it? In a few blocks, a cloud formed. A little further and the cloud was a storm of self-doubt.

Everything? He’d done everything? Yes! And no. The documents were ready, true. He’d printed and stacked all the pages. Everything in order. But parts of the work fell short of his best, and Jim knew it. He turned the car around and called home to say he’d be late.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge, thinking about those clouds or “gut feelings” that come to us. When something says you can do better…do you? It’s the high calling of our daily work.

A certain ruler asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good—except God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.'"

"All these I have kept since I was a boy," he said.

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

Luke 18:18–22
