Keep Trying
Audio / Produced by The High CallingTranscript
At just 21 years old, Rowland knew he wanted to own a business. But when he opened a dry goods store in Haverhill, Massachusetts, it failed. Over the next 10 years, Rowland opened three more stores—and had three more failures.
Despite these disappointments, however, he was learning. And still trying. Moving to New York, he opened his fifth store—his fifth!—and it took. Today, Rowland’s dry goods store is known as R. H. Macy & Co.
This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge, and the lesson here is failure—a course we can all ace [laughs], if we study hard! Mr. Macy reminds us that while stores may close, school stays open…in the high calling of our daily work.
Intelligent people are always ready to learn. Their ears are open for knowledge.
