Not Every Skill Is Profitable

Once you reach a certain age, you know your skills. Your organizational, communication and analytical abilities are basically chiseled early in life and then you spend the rest of your days refining them.

But not all skills are profitable. In fact, when you use certain abilities in the workplace, they can be detrimental, leading to mental and physical exhaustion.

Clair Burge calls some of her abilities as “burnout skills.”

"These are the actions at which you excel, that people identify as your strong points,” she writes, “but they drain you of motivation.”

She is now reassessing her career and putting more thought and effort into “energizing skills,” the abilities that motivate her, refuel her and give her return on investment.
