The Other Glove

Transcript

Author James McDermott recalls when he was a young boy at the train station. He saw a man on a departing train fiddling with his pipe. As the man waved goodbye, he removed one glove to better handle the pipe. In his enthusiasm, the glove fell out of the window and onto the platform.

An alert porter snatched it and ran along with the moving train. But to no avail. The train pulled away. The man on the train nodded to the runner, removed his other glove, and tossed it from the window. He shouted, "I hope they fit." That image stayed with McDermott the rest of his life.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. To let go with dignity and grace is a lesson for all of us—in the high calling of our daily work.

Better one handful with tranquillity than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.
