An older man died while sitting in his parked truck. For several days, his body remained sitting in the truck before someone found him. The irony is that after the man died—and two full days before his body was found—a policeman wrote a parking ticket and attached it to the truck's windshield.

Later, the head of the city council apologized. He said: "It must be so sad for the family, and we extend our sincere sympathies." Then he added, "It is simply a case of the parking officer not noticing."

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Certain tasks may grow mechanical, but when work involves other people, we owe it—and them—our full attention . . . in the high calling of our daily work.
