In the Great Depression, John Smithers lost his life savings.

A woman read of Smithers’ downfall and bemoaned: “The investments of a lifetime! Gone!”

But another woman who knew John said confidently, “John Smithers lost money—not his life investments.” She leaned forward. “John’s mind is full of knowledge and experience. He gives of himself, helping charities and educating others. He’s faithful, honest, and respected. Believe me, John's life investments are secure and paying dividends.”

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Financial prudence matters, of course. But pity the person whose only riches show up on spreadsheets. Life’s richest returns come from how we invest ourselves . . . in the high calling of our daily work.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matt. 6:20-21)
