52 Workday Prayers: Psalm 21 - When Your Work is Going Well

Prayer / Produced by partner of TOW
Well

In your strength the king rejoices, O LORD,
and in your help how greatly he exults!
You have given him his heart’s desire,
and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah
For you meet him with rich blessings;
you set a crown of fine gold on his head. . . .
For the king trusts in the LORD,
and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved.

Psalm 21:1-3, 7

Prelude

Depending on your position at work and on how things are going these days, you may or may not relate to the substance of Psalm 21. But, as you pray based on this psalm, see what the Lord might have for you. Even if you’re not “the king,” perhaps you can relate to aspects of the king’s experience.

Prayer

God, things are going well right now. I can see the results of my work and I’m pleased. Others see it too and this feels great. Thank you!

But, Lord, I’m aware of my tendency to embrace my success too strongly. Yes, it’s fine for me to find joy in my work and in the fruit of my labor. But when I start thinking too much of myself, that’s a problem. I confess that this is a temptation when things are going well.

So, may I take my cue from the king in Psalm 21. May I rejoice in you and your strength at work in me. Give me eyes to see that my successes are blessings from you. Remind me of how you have answered my prayers for help in the past.

O Lord, above all and at all times, may I put my trust in you and your steadfast love. Not in myself, my cleverness, my competence, my accomplishments. But in you. In this season of blessing in my work, may I bless you in return and trust you even more day by day. Amen.

Ponder Throughout the Day

As good things happen in your work, rejoice in God’s blessings, recognizing his grace at work in your life.

For Further Reflection

Read all of Psalm 21, paying attention to what the Spirit of God is stirring up in your heart, especially in relationship to your work. Talk with God about what you are thinking and feeling.

You might also reflect on the following passage from the Psalms:

Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning,
for in you I put my trust.
Teach me the way I should go,
for to you I lift up my soul. - Psalm 143:8
