God’s Calling Is More Than Work (Video)

Video / Produced by TOW Project

God made work central to human life. God himself is a worker (Gen. 1:1-31), and he created people his image.

In Genesis 1:28 God gave people a job description: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it.”

God’s work order applies to all kinds of work that people do. That includes:

  • Production - making useful goods and services
  • Reproduction - raising families and taking care of others
  • Protection – caring for the world God created

Everyone is called to do this work. Even if God hasn’t guided you to a particular “calling” or occupation, work is part of your make-up because it’s how God made you.

God’s calling is bigger than just paid work. Calling also includes family, community, and church.

The work God leads you to may be unpaid, such as raising children or caring for a disabled family member. Or a hobby like coaching soccer or writing poetry could be the most important thing you do for God.

You may have multiple callings. If God leads you to be married and to be a small business owner, you’ll have to balance the time and responsibilities of both.

Colossians 3:17 says, “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

You don’t have to hear a voice from God or find some unique job that only you can do. All the work you do is part of God’s design. And when you do your work well, whatever it is, you’re answering God’s call.
